French-Swiss movie director Jean-Luc Godard has handed away peacefully at his dwelling on the age of 91, it’s been confirmed. He was a pioneer within the French New Wave motion, altering the face of cinema as we all know it together with his expressive and experimental filmmaking.
Starting his profession as a movie critic, Godard’s first main work was as a director was 1960’s À bout de souffle (aka Breathless), and he continued his rewriting of the cinematic language with the likes of Le Petit Soldat (aka The Little Soldier), Vivre sa vie (aka My Life To Reside), Les Carabiniers (aka The Carabineers), Le Mépris (aka Contempt), Bande à Half (aka Band of Outsiders), and Week-end. Godard labored prolifically by the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s, and continued to make movies into the ’90s and after the flip of the millennium – his ultimate characteristic was 2018 essay film The Picture E-book, aka Le Livre d’picture.
Tributes to Godard have begun to reach from filmmakers he went on to encourage. Edgar Wright mentioned: “RIP Jean-Luc Godard, one of the crucial influential, iconoclastic film-makers of all of them. It was ironic that he himself revered the Hollywood studio film-making system, as maybe no different director impressed as many individuals to only decide up a digicam and begin taking pictures…”
Scott Derrickson shared a tribute through which he mentioned that Godard “modified the type of cinema like Bob Dylan modified the type of music.” Antonio Banderas thanked the director “for increasing the boundaries of the cinema.” Asif Kapadia merely wrote, “The King is Lifeless.”
A tribute arrived, too, from French President Emmanuel Macron, who wrote: “It was like an apparition in French cinema. Then he turned a grasp. Jean-Luc Godard, probably the most iconoclastic of New Wave filmmakers, had invented a resolutely trendy, intensely free artwork. We’re dropping a nationwide treasure, a imaginative and prescient of genius.”
